The defender has gone on to establish himself as a dependable defender at Anfield.

Jose Mourinho was keen to sign Virgil van Dijk for Manchester United, it has now been revealed.

Former Leeds United midfielder Chris Kamara has revealed how the AS Roma manager wanted the Dutch centre-back, but was unable to sign him because United were not ready to get the money for the transfer.

Van Dijk, then moved to Liverpool and went ahead to help them win the Premier League and the Champions League.

"I can exclusively reveal that I told Jose Mourinho to take Virgil van Dijk to Manchester United," Kamara is quoted as telling Proper Football podcast.

"Jose said, ‘these lot [Man Utd] won’t give me the money for him’. And then Van Dijk went to Liverpool instead.’

Troy Deeney, a former Premier League striker Troy Deeney, replied: "Manchester United fans are going to be in absolute tatters hearing that!’

"He’s unbelievably good, Van Dijk. He’s so tall and so quick. As well as being physical and very quick, he can pass with both feet, he’s a Rolls-Royce of a player. He’s just a level above everyone else in my opinion."

The former Chelsea manager was in charge at Old Trafford for almost two years and guided the Red Devils to win the Europa League and EFL Cup.

After leaving Manchester United, he was appointed by Tottenham Hotspur’s boss and was sacked after 17 months following a run of poor results.

He is currently in charge of Serie A outfit Roma and has won the Europa Conference League so far.
