Benni McCarthy Opens Up on World Cup Heartbreak
)
In an emotional interview with Sporty TV, the current Kenyan national football team coach recalled how he had anticipated playing a key role in the historic tournament, only to be left out of the final squad by then-coach Carlos Alberto Parreira.
“It was heartbreaking,” McCarthy admitted.
“You know, the career that I had starting from South Africa, from where I began until where it really took me—playing for a lot of superpower houses, clubs in Europe—and then finally to have a World Cup for the first time played in Africa, in your own home country, and you probably being the biggest football star to have come out of your country at that time. Then not to play in the World Cup in your own home, was literally heartbreaking.”

Despite being South Africa’s all-time top goal scorer and having had a successful career in Europe, McCarthy was not included in the final squad as Parreira opted to go with a younger, less experienced team.
“That is probably one of the regrets that you will always have—that I was never able to be part of playing in a World Cup that was hosted in my country,” he said.
South Africa went on to make history for less desirable reasons.
Despite a valiant 2-1 win against France and a draw with Mexico, Bafana Bafana crashed out of the group stage following a 3-0 defeat to Uruguay, becoming the first host nation in World Cup history to exit the tournament in the first round.

McCarthy believes his experience and presence could have made a significant difference.
“I think the experience that I had at that time and the teams that I played for, compared to the players that we had in South Africa, that we had in that national team, we could have done with having someone like myself around the players,” he explained.
"I think I would have sweated blood for my country. Because I would have wanted them to succeed, and I would have wanted to do the best that I possibly can."
McCarthy Makes Peace

Now at the helm of Harambee Stars, McCarthy has seemingly found peace with the past.
“So yeah, for that, I am a bit heartbroken because I was never included in that squad. But it is what it is now. It’s many years later. So yeah, I’ve kind of gotten over it.”
Though the memory still stings, McCarthy’s focus has shifted to writing new history with Kenya’s national team, bringing his wealth of experience to the East African football scene.
The former Manchester United first team coach has been tasked with guiding the Harambee Stars through the 2024 African Nations Championship poised to be hosted between Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania in August.
Additionally, McCarthy is expected to take charge of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) which is also a joint venture between the three East African Nations.
