Brian Wanyama had to suffer the ignonimity of missing a penalty that cost AFC Leopards all three points away in Bandari last Sunday.
AFC Leopards head coach Fredrick Ambani has jumped to Brian Wanyama’s defence after making a crucial mistake during the side’s 0-0 draw with Bandari in Mombasa last Sunday.
The tightly contested FKF Premier League clash was heading into its final stages when Ronald Sichenje won a penalty after being brought down in the box by Bandari’s Swaleh Pamba.
With the regular spot-kick takers—Kayci Odhiambo and Victor Omune—already substituted, Wanyama took on the responsibility. However, his effort was denied by former Yanga goalkeeper and two-time FKF Cup winner, Farouk Shikalo.

‘Do Not Come Back Home’ - Frustrated Athlete Warns Foreign-Born Kenyans Against Representing the Country
The Olympian has expressed her disappointment at the poor treatment subjected to sportsmen and women in Kenya, warning foreign-born athletes against switching allegiance.
The miss proved costly as Leopards, chasing a top-five finish, were forced to settle for a single point. The result saw them remain sixth in the table on 46 points, while Bandari stayed eighth with 42.
Despite the missed opportunity, Ambani refused to point fingers, instead offering words of encouragement for the young midfielder.
“Missing penalties happens everywhere—even to the biggest players,” Ambani said post-match. “Wanyama wasn’t even the designated taker, but both Kayci and Omune had already been subbed off. He became the makeshift penalty taker. I cannot blame him.”

Former AFC Leopards Captain Lifts Lid on Career-Ending Plight at Ingwe
Former AFC Leopards captain Washington Munene has shed light on turbulent injury period that led to premature career-end.
Ambani was keen to highlight Wanyama’s overall contribution to the team, urging fans and teammates to rally behind him.
“He really helped the team today. I cannot crucify him. We need to encourage him and give him the confidence to take even more penalties in the future,” he added.
Ambani also shouldered part of the blame for the draw, admitting to a tactical misstep that left his side lacking a focal point in attack during the first half.
“We started slow off the blocks but picked up momentum as the game progressed. We didn’t have a target man when the match started, which made it difficult for us to create chances. But Omune did well,” he explained.

Gor Mahia: How K’Ogalo Can Still Snatch FKF Premier League Title from Kenya Police Despite Latest Stumble
Hanging onto hope, here is how Gor Mahia can still lift the FKF Premier League title despite Kenya Police needing one win from two matches to be crowned.
The coach reserved special praise for substitute Chris Koloti, whose presence gave Leopards a much-needed lift in the second half.
“Koloti came in and made an impact. We were better in the second half but struggled in the first. Bandari had some moments towards the end, and that’s how the game goes sometimes. A draw is a fair result,” said Ambani.
AFC Leopards will now regroup and look to bounce back in their next outing as the league campaign enters its final stretch.
