Triple World champion Noah Lyles has opened up on the reason he will not be contesting the 4x400m relay at the World Athletics Relays.

Fans were looking forward to watching triple World champion Noah Lyles contesting in the 4x400m and 4x100m relays at the World Athletics Relays but the American will only contest in the 4x100m relay.

Lyles made a surprise appearance in the 4x400m relay team that took silver at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland but the decision to place him in the team rubbed some people the wrong way including the 2022 World 100m champion Fred Kerley.

The two-time World 200m champion, speaking during a pre-race press conference ahead of the World Relays, said that

“Here, unfortunately, no, I won’t be running the 4x400m relay. Let’s just say it caused a lot of controversy watching somebody run the 60m and then go ahead to run the 4x400m.

“Some people got written up, other people were threatened with fires. A lot of people in the US were very, very, very upset that I ran the 4x4.

“I can't give all the details but there were coaches who coached athletes that were on the 4x4 that didn't get to run that were upset about that.

“They complained to higher-ups about the decision. The higher-ups decided to act. Whether this will happen again, I don’t know. Are they going to make new rule changes? I don’t know. But the way that the rules are set up now is anybody who is actually on the team can be in the relay,” the 26-year-old.

He added that he would still put the work into training and disclosed that he would always be available if needed to compete in the discipline. However, he will be training in the 100m and 200m more and be strong in the 400m.

“I am going to keep doing what I do. It is the relay coach’s decision. I am going to tell them the same thing – “If you want to use me, I am here, if you don’t, that’s fine”. I am not going to have hurt feelings about it.

“I will be training specifically for the 100 and 200 and be as strong as possible in the 400. I am in the best shape I have ever been in my life,” he said.
