Without the company of World marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge, all eyes will be on the duo to deliver in the men’s category.
Milano Marathon champion Titus Kipruto and Rosemary Wanjiru will lead a star-studded field of athletes for the Tokyo Marathon in Japan slated for Sunday, March 5.
Kipruto is the 2022 Milano Marathon champion and brags of a life time best of 2:04:54, a time he ran to place second at last year’s Amsterdam Marathon in October.
On his part, Koech lines up with a Personal Best time of 2:04:09 and competed at last year’s Chicago Marathon where he settled for fourth place.
Without the company of defending champion and World marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge, all eyes will be on the duo to deliver in the men’s category.
However, the race also has some top athletes, including 2021 London Marathon champion Sisay Lemma of Ethiopia and Stephen Kissa of Uganda.
Lemma returns to Tokyo after a third-place finish in the 2020 edition. He lines up as the fastest in the field with a personal best time of 2:03:36.
In the women’s category, Wanjiru will be Kenya’s sole representative as she lines up against the competitive field. In her debut over the 42km distance, Wanjiru finished second in 2:18:00 at the 2022 Berlin Marathon.
She is bound to face competition from Ethiopian duo of 2019 Berlin Marathon champion Ashete Bekere and Tigist Abayechew. The duo line up with personal best times of 2:17:58 and 2:18:03 respectively.
Bekere returns to Tokyo with the hope of improving last year’s second-place finish. All eyes will also be on Wanjiru as she fights to retain the title that was won by compatriot Brigid Kosgei last year.
