Kenyan athletics officials believe the success of the Kip Keino Classic has strengthened the country’s bid to host the 2029 World Championships.

When it comes to the world of track and field, Kenya is always at the forefront of it all, dominating the middle- and long-distance events, and she is now coming up in the sprints.

Kenya has also hosted huge events in the recent past, including the World Under-18 Championships and the World Under-20 Championships.

The rich nation also hosts a World Athletics continental gold tour event, Kip Keino Classic, which is entering its sixth edition this year.

Athletics Kenya president Jack Tuwei revealed that things are looking up for the nation, and they have currently bid to host the 2029 World Championships.

Kenya had initially bid to host the 2025 World Championships, but they lost the bid, with Tokyo, Japan taking the honours. Kenya also lost the bid to host the 2027 continental showpiece, losing the bid to Beijing, China.

“Having the Kip Keino Classic here gives athletes a chance to compete before their families and friends, and that is why we have bid to host the World Championships in 2029. We hope this time we shall get it,” Jack Tuwei said.

Barnaba Korir revealed that, having hosted the Kip Keino Classic for five years now, it is a great sign that Kenya is ready for the next challenge.

Kenya has also hosted the junior championships, and hosting the senior championships would be a plus for the nation.

Barnaba Korir revealed that the Kip Keino Classic has constantly attracted stars including Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Kenny Bednarek and Sha’Carri Richardson, and there is no doubt that they will be elated to come back for the World Championships.

“It is proof that Kenya can bring athletes who have done well, those who matter worldwide. This is why this event is ranked as one of the best in the world…this is something that we are proud of,” Barnaba Korir shared.

“I believe that if we continue like this, we shall be able to get the Diamond League and eventually the World Championship, and I can see that the way the stadium is being built, we shall be competing with the world.

“Kenya has hosted the World Under-20 and World Under-18 Championships, and they were very successful. We bid for the World Championships, not successful, but very close, and I’m sure that we shall manage soon.”

With the renovation of the stadiums, Kenya will have an upper hand when it comes to bidding to host the 2029 World Championships.
