The 100m men's qualifying time for the World Championships is 10.00 seconds.

Samwel Imeta has promised there is more to come after a successful start to the season which saw him ran 9.94 seconds on Saturday, February 25 at the Athletics Kenya second meet.

In the race that saw Africa 100m champion Ferdinand Omanyala win with a world-leading time of 9.82, Imeta also stunned the masses after an outstanding performance that saw him settle for second place. South Africa’s Henricho Bruintjies finished third in 10.20.

This marks the first time the 24-year-old has run sub-10 seconds and he automatically qualifies for the World Championships in Budapest slated for August. “More is expected,” he said in a post-race interview.

Last year, Imeta made Team Kenya for the African Athletics Championships but could not make it to the final in the 100m category.

He, however, got another chance to represent the country at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. With a third place at the semifinal, he could also unfortunately not make the cut to the final at the global show.

Imeta blamed poor preparations for his performances in both assignments. He, however, noted that this year will be great considering he has started off on a high. “Last year, I didn’t have a great buildup for the events,” he said.

He went ahead and appreciated his coaches and training mates for the motivation they accorded him saying it was not an easy journey.

The Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) soldier added that he hopes to lower his time in the next Athletics Kenya meet to be staged at the Ruringu Stadium in Nyeri from March 10-11.
