Eighteen year-old emerging star bears great ambitions in track racing.

Youngster Isaac Omurwa is confident of a win when he lines up against a competitive field at the East Africa under-18 and under-20 athletics championships to be staged in Dar es Salam, Tanzania where he will be competing in the 100m.

In the second Athletics Kenya meet at the Nyayo National Stadium held over the weekend, Omurwa, who is the younger brother to Africa 100 champion Ferdinand Omanyala obliterated a strong field to win the under-20 men’s 100m final in 10.85.

As poised as he looked while crossing the line, the 18-year-old revealed that it was his first competitive race and he was happy for the win.

“I am just going for a win…at the moment, I am not focusing on the time I will post. I started training in January and I’m happy with the results,” Omurwa said.

The 18-year-old added that the win comes as great motivation and he will invest more time on the track. Being a first timer in the 100m, Omurwa said utilizing his skills and have a positive mentality are the key things that help him sail through tough times.

Despite the challenges he faces, Omurwa noted that athletics is his passion and he ‘just loves doing it.’

He noted that with the sprints touching base in the country due to the Omanyala effect, Omurwa believes there is light at the end of the tunnel. “He (Omanyala) is my role model,” he added.
