Salim Mvurya has urged fans to respect public property ahead of the Kip Keino Classic at Ulinzi Sports Complex.

Fans and athletes alike are just counting the days ahead of the sixth edition of the Kip Keino Classic scheduled for Saturday, May 31, at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.

The event, initially set to be held at the Nyayo National Stadium, was moved to the Ulinzi Sports Complex due to the construction going on.

A new tartan track is being installed at the Nyayo National Stadium, and the process will not be complete until after May 31, hence the decision to find another venue for the Kip Keino Classic.

The Ulinzi Sports Complex is a relatively small stadium compared to the Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Sports Complex, and will host fewer fans.

Ahead of the event, Sports CS Salim Mvurya urged fans who will go to witness the magic to ensure they avoid rioting and destruction of property.

In most cases, fans clash during football matches, with the recent being the game Gor Mahia played against Murang’a Seal, where K’Ogalo were held to a goalless draw.

Now, Salim Mvurya is not ruling out the possibility of chaos but has since urged fans to enjoy the competition and avoid engaging in unnecessary fights.

He explained that millions have been invested to rebuild the stadiums, and he hopes that fans will be gracious enough to respect that.

“We expect around 10,000 spectators, which is a big number. What I want to say is, even as we come here to enjoy the race, please avoid vandalism,” Salim Mvurya said in a press conference to launch the Kip Keino Classic.

“A lot of investment has gone into this facility and even the many others we are doing, Nyayo and Kasarani. These are public investments, and when we do that, we also expect that we shall have responsible fans and spectators.”

At the same time, Salim Mvurya also announced the government's sponsorship of the event, pointing out that they give out Ksh 300 million.

“I also want to inform Athletics Kenya and all Kenyans that we have committed to spending Ksh 300 million for this event, which has already been approved. Sporting activities are as serious as any other investments in the country,” he said.

So far, Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, will lead the Kenyan team, while the international charge will be led by two-time world champion Anderson Peters.
