Were reveals his targets ahead of the upcoming Olympic games in Paris having achieved qualification time at the Kip Keino classic two weeks ago.
Wiseman Were has revealed his targets for the forthcoming Olympics after achieving the 400m hurdles qualifying time nearly a fortnight after his display at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi.
Were clocked a meet record of 48.57 to win the men’s 400m hurdles at the Absa Kip Keino Classic at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday, and effectively met the qualifying mark for the Paris Olympic Games.
Were is also part of Team Kenya’s contingent at the World Relays in Nassau, Bahamas where he will be flying the national flag in the men’s 4x400m alongside Zablon Ekwam, David Sayanek, Boniface Mweresa, Brian Tenega, Moitalel Nadookila, Kelvin Kipkorir, Nathaniel Kipngetich and Kennedy Kimeu.
He was also part of the Kenyan team at March’s African Games in Accra, Ghana where he finished fourth in the men’s 400m.
Speaking to Olympics Kenya, Were revealed his four targets for the upcoming Olympic games, where he will be seeking to become the first Kenyan since the late Nicolas Bett to win a hurdling medal at a major honours.
“My target is to stay healthy. The second thing is to get there when it's fine and the third thing is to go there, make a mark, and challenge guys as well because we are going for fast times.
“The fourth thing is to make it to the finals because it is a process. I have been to World Champs and I got to the semis, so I am looking forward to the Olympics, where I want to get to the finals.”
Speaking on his display at the classic, Were admitted to being chuffed to bits for his performance.
“It was so encouraging because this is an Olympic year and as well it was a plus for me because everything went as planned.
