5 things to look out for at the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat

The Diamond League Meeting in Rabat, Morocco will promise to be a thrilling event, attracting elite athletes, and here are 5 things to look out for.

The Diamond League Meeting in Rabat will be coming up on Sunday, May 19 with tons of athletes continuing their hunt for tickets to the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Some of the athlete headlining the Diamond League include two-time World 200m champion Shericka Jackson, two-time world 3000m Steeplechase champion Soufiane El Bakkali and world 800m silver medallist Emmanuel Wanyonyi among other stars.

Ahead of the event, here are five things you need to know as the athletes gear up to descend on the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

1) Shericka Jackson launches 200m campaign

Following her withdrawal from the Diamond League Meeting in Suzhou, China, fans were anticipating Jackson back on track and she will be finally making her first appearance in the Diamond League Meeting this season.

The Jamaican will also be running her first 200m of the season after impressing in the 100m at the JAAA All Comers Series #1. She now looks to continue the hot streak in her build-up to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

2) Soufiane El Bakkali to impress home crowd

Olympic 3000m steeplechase champion Bakkali hopes to continue his winning streak on home soil. He has delivered before, breaking the meeting record in Rabat in both 2022 (7:58.28) and 2023 (7:56.68).

Home fans will be expecting much from him and it is no doubt that he will give them a great show. He has a huge task which includes defending his Olympic title and Diamond League Trophy.

3) Emmanuel Wanyonyi to continue winning streak

Youngster Emmanuel Wanyonyi has been off to a great start to his season and he plans to continue winning as he heads to Rabat to outshine his fellow Kenyans. He will be up against former World champion Emmanuel Korir and Commonwealth Games champion Wycliffe Kinyamal.

Wanyonyi, Kinyamal and Korir have been among the most consistent performers in the 800m in recent years, taking 11 Diamond League victories between them since 2021.

4) Edinah Jebitok to take on Ethiopian charge

Cross country guru Edinah Jebitok will be up against a strong Ethiopian charge, just like Beatrice Chebet who beat the strong field at the Diamond League Meeting in Doha, Qatar. The Ethiopian athletes will be out to get revenge against Jebitok after Chebet showed them dust in Doha.

5) Yohan Blake back at it after injury setback

The second-fastest man in the world, Yohan Blake opened his 2024 season with the 100m at the Miramar Invitational in the US where he faded to finish eighth before finishing ninth in the Diamond League Meeting in Xiamen.

He was confirmed for the next meeting in Suzhou, China, but unfortunately had to pull out due to a hamstring issue and him being confirmed for the 100m is proof that he has recovered and ready to compete.
