5 things Ferdinand Omanyala, Faith Kipyegon & Co should note ahead of the Olympic national trials

Athletics Kenya has unveiled a list of five key requirements for the athletes who will be looking to participate in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Athletics Kenya has unveiled the selection criteria for the athletics team to the Paris Olympic Games track and field events scheduled for Thursday, August 1 and Sunday, August 11.

The federation outlined five key things that athletes must have met before bidding for a ticket to the global showpiece at the Olympic Games national trials.

Athletics Kenya noted that the athletes must have attained the qualifying standards as per the International Olympic Committee and World Athletics either through the entry standards or the world ranking quota.

Secondly, athletes must have met the antidoping requirements that are specific to Category A countries. The Athletics Integrity Unit recently introduced ruthless testing method to catch drug cheats ahead of Olympic games.

Athletics Kenya also emphasised that athletes who meet the top two criteria, they need to participate in the national trials for them to be selected for the Olympics.

During the trials, Athletics Kenya explained that the two athletes to cross the finish line would be selected.

“In the event an athlete is among the first 2 across the finish line and has not qualified by entry standard, (in World Ranking quota), the athlete will be put on standby until the closure of the qualifying window (30th June, 2024) for him/her to be considered,” the statement from AK read.

Athletics Kenya also noted that the third athlete will be selected by a panel of selectors to be appointed by Athletics Kenya and the athlete must have met the top three requirements.
