Kelvin Kiptum’s father has sought the help of President William Ruto over a number of problems his family is facing , including a government promise yet to be honoured.

The family of the late marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum now wants President William Ruto to help alleviate their suffering.

Kiptum’s parents have been complaining over being neglected, and even accused the late marathoner’s management company of ‘forgetting them’ when they distributed part of the athlete’s vast wealth.

Samson Cheruiyot, the athlete’s father, wants the Head of State to help intervene as he claims he has not received Ksh5 million promised to his family by the government when his son died.

“To President William Ruto, I have three questions,” Cheruiyot started in an undated clip posted on social media.

“First, I want to say thank you for the houses we were built for. Even though one house has nothing, I say thank you.

“Secondly, I have tried to reach you but it has been difficult and I have decided as Kevin Kiptum’s parent, I want to ask; we were called by [former Sports CS] Ababu Namwamba on March 20, 2024 to Riadha House.

“When we got there, we had a conversation with him and he told us that they wanted to give us some money following Kiptum’s death. They gave Ksh5 million to Kiptum's coach’s family in Rwanda.

“My wife and I witnessed this and until now, we have not received our share. I do not know where our Ksh5 million went,” he further said.

Cheruiyot also claims his family is yet to receive a postmortem report of Kiptum’s death while the car the athlete was driving before he met his untimely death through a road accident in February 2024 is still being kept away from them.

“The other thing is that since Kiptum died, we have not received [postmortem] results and it is the second year,” added Cheruiyot.

“The third thing is that my son’s car, which he was involved in the accident with, I have not received. I have been taken round in circles while the car is still at Kaptagat. I am nearly giving up on it.”

It is the latest complaint from Cheruiyot who previously accused Kiptum’s management company Golazo of not giving them a cent from the late marathoner’s earnings with only his wife and children benefiting.

Cheruiyot also claimed Kiptum’s widow Asenath Rotich ‘deserted’ the home and left with his grandchildren immediately after his son’s burial.

Kiptum died alongside his coach Gervais Hakizimana following a road accident near Kaptagat on February 11 2024.

His death happened over three months after he had set a new marathon world record of 2:00:35 in Chicago in October 2023 and the new mark had been ratified just a week before the accident that claimed his life.
