2021 World Under 20 champion Heristone Wanyonyi and Stephen Ndangili are among the budding athletes.

2018 Commonwealth Games 20km race walk bronze medallist Samuel Gathimba has counseled pretenders to his throne to follow the tough training techniques if they really want to speed past him in the sport.

Gathimba noted that it may take time before the youngsters get to his level considering the type of training he undergoes. He added that for an athlete to get to his level, they need to invest more time into training and be ready to endure pain as it is never a rosy journey.

2021 World Under 20 champion Heristone Wanyonyi and Stephen Ndangili are among the budding athletes eyeing Gathimba’s coveted place over the distance.

“I have seen many young athletes coming up and wanting to break my records but I have secret training techniques that have enabled me to get to that point. If they seek to get to my level, they have to sacrifice a lot of their time into training,” Gathimba said.

During the third Athletics Kenya meet, the 35-year-old oozed class as he cut the tape first in 39:17.60 in the 10,000m walk race. Ndangili settled for second place in 41:01.20 ahead of Dominic Ndingiti (41:10.70).

He noted that he was using the event to gauge his speed as he seeks to graduate t the 35km distance. His main target is qualifying for the World Championships and he revealed that going forward, he will look to work on his speed.

To the upcoming athletes, Gathimba encouraged them to maintain their consistency in training and their sacrifice will pay off eventually.

“Race walking is great…once you learn the ropes around it, things will become easier for you,” he said.
