Julius Yego Discloses One Thing He is Aiming at This Season After Recent Struggles

Former world javelin champion Julius Yego has set one major target for himself this year as he looks to regain his old form after struggling in recent years.

Former world javelin champion Julius Yego is keen to avoid lightning striking twice as he begins his 2025 season at the Doha Diamond League.

Yego had a hard time qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics, when he failed to hit the qualifying standard, only making it through the world rankings.

With the 2025 World Championships coming up in Tokyo, Japan in September, Yego needs to qualify again for what will be his seventh appearance at the global showpiece and he knows it will not be easy.

The 36-year-old has therefore set himself the target of making sure he hits the 85.5m mark that is required to nick a ticket to Tokyo, a difficult task that he was only able to manage twice last season, both at the Paris Olympics.

Yego threw 85.97m in the first round to qualify for the final, where he improved to 87.73m, but that was enough just for a fifth-place finish. He, however, has to reach those heights again, starting with the Doha Diamond League on Friday.

What Has Julius Yego Set Out to Achieve?

Julius Yego will be at the Doha Diamond League.

“I have prepared well in terms of training because I have been working since the turn of the new year,” Yego told Telecomasia.net.

“Of course, the target in the first competition of the season is to start well and give a good throw. It will be a very competitive field in Doha and I believe that challenge will make me better.

“The target as I start the season is definitely to hit the World Championship qualification mark. This is something I believe I am very much capable of achieving.”

Yego has endured tough times since winning gold at the 2015 World Championships before claiming silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics, with injuries playing a major part in his woes.

The five-time African champion has not gone past the first round at all the last four World Championships that he has been at and will hope that 2025 is different as he enters the final years of his career.
