Is the world record in the offing? World 800m silver medallist Emmanuel Wanyonyi has opened up on the specific times he aims to run this season.

Reigning World 800m silver medallist Emmanuel Wanyonyi has disclosed the specific time he intends to run this season as the main focus shifts to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

After successfully opening his track season with a win, clocking a world-leading time of 1:43.57 at the Kip Keino Classic over the weekend, Wanyonyi now plans to lower his Personal Best time.

His time currently stands at 1:42.80, a time he ran for a fourth-place finish at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, when he made his debut in the senior category.

He has been vague about attacking the world record that was set by compatriot David Rudisha back in 2012 during the London Olympics. The time currently stands at 1:40.91.

“My target this season is improving my Personal Best time and running 1:41 or even running a lower 1:42 than I have run before. That will be my main goal,” Wanyonyi said.

At the Kip Keino Classic held at the Nyayo National, Wanyonyi was elated to have won the race and appreciated the fans who showed up to cheer him on as he opened his season.

He is unaware of where he will be competing next as he explained that his coach is the one who plans for his races.

“The race was good and I’m happy to have won the race and I thank God for enabling me to do well. I thank the fans for coming to cheer me because if it were not for them, I probably could not have run this time. I don’t know where I will run next but my coach has a plan for me,” Wanyonyi added.

Last season, the 2021 World Under-20 800m champion had a stellar season and he hopes to replicate the same track performances having started on a high note.
