Derron Herah has come to the rescue of his wife, Elaine Thompson, explaining what really led to the split with coach Shanikie Osbourne.

Elaine Thompson-Herah’s husband, Derron Herah, has come to her rescue after her decision to change coaches caused an online uproar.

Speaking to SportsMax TV, Derron explained that since Elaine's departure from the MVP Track Club, she has faced a lot of backlash and he felt like it was time for him to come to her rescue.

He added that back then, they chose to assume the incidents but they are human, and sometimes things get to them.

“Typically, you will see different stories for many reasons and I just let it pass and I didn’t see the need to explain myself. However, this coming season I decided to approach things a little bit differently because, at the end of the day, we are human.

"There has been a lot of stuff going on from the time Elaine left MVP up until this moment. There were so many attacks. All the decisions I make are to have good solutions for many of the situations we have been in,” he explained.

He added that he did not think Elaine splitting with her coach, Shanikie Osbourne, would be a big deal and attract such negative criticism.

Derron further explained that Elaine achieving a season-best of 10.79 at the Prefontaine Classic was not because of the coaching setup since he was working around the clock to get things done starting from the end of the 2022 season.

“During the trials, Elaine hadn’t trained well for about three months, we were just trying to get her to make it to the team for the World Championships.

"After the trials, she was advised by the doctor to rest for two weeks, which she did. I was trying to find a situation for her to try,” he explained.

Derron explained that as they were ending the season, they now wanted to discuss with the coach concerning the payments and compensation. He added that in normal circumstances, coaches earn 10-15% of the earnings.

However, Derron wanted coach Osbourne to give a figure that they would work with but the tactician was reluctant and wanted the 15%.

“I suggested a figure for her but she did not agree to it. I talked to Elaine and she talked to her but we did not get to an agreement. I did not want a third party to be involved but we had to bring in an agent,” he added.

Osbourne then sent a figure that she wanted and Derron thought that the amount being requested was a lot and he suggested a reasonable figure. The back and forth is what led to them splitting with the tactician.
