Sifan Hassan has made a statement comeback to the track nearly after nine months of being out and has proven to be the queen of distance running.

Reigning Chicago Marathon champion Sifan Hassan has announced her comeback to the track with an astonishing run in the 5000m at the Track Fest in Los Angeles on Saturday night.

Hassan did a solo run and showcased her mastery of the 5000m to eventually take the top prize after close to nine months of not competing on the track.

She clocked an impressive 14:58.83 to cross the finish line ahead of Natalie Rule who posted 15:07.00 to cross the line second. Amy-Eloise Neale sealed the podium after clocking 15:07.38.

In preparation for the event, Hassan shared on her Instagram to explain how her training had gone and what she anticipated. She said: “Training has been going on well lately. I’m adjusting to the track and I’m looking forward to testing things out over 5000m this Saturday.”

The last time the former London Marathon champion competed on the track was during the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary where she competed in the 1500, 5000m, and 10,000m races.

The Dutchwoman took the silver medal in the 5000m, a bronze in the 1500m, and settled for fourth place in the 10,000m after falling a few meters to the finish line.

Hassan made her switch to the full marathon last year, claiming victory in her debut at the London Marathon, dubbed as the most dramatic win of all time. She then continued her winning streak to the Chicago Marathon later that year, beating two-time champion Ruth Chepng’etich.

This season, she started with a fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Marathon and the 5000m that she has just won. At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Hassan is yet to confirm the races she will compete in but one thing for sure is that she might opt to run on the track and also the marathon.
