ATHLETICS Defending champion Patrick Kipngeno returns to Mountain and Trail Running Championship

Ezekiel Kirui will compete in the 85 km long trail while Geoffrey Ndung’u will take part in the 45km short trail.

Patrick Kipng'eno and Philemon Kiriago will lead Team Kenya to the World Mountain and Trail Running Championship scheduled for Tuesday, June 6 to Saturday, June 10 in Innsbruck-Stubai, Austria.

Kipngeno will be returning as the defending champion and he will be hoping to successfully retain his title as he takes on a strong field. On his part, Kiriago finished second during last year’s event and will be hoping to go one step better at the event.

The duo will be joined by Hillary Kiptum, Josephat Kiprotich, Joyce Njeru, Valentine Ruto, and Philaries Kisang and they will be participating in the up-and-down vertical run and mountain classic events.

Ezekiel Kirui will compete in the 85 km long trail while Geoffrey Ndung’u will take part in the 45km short trail.

As reported by The Star Sports, Athletics Kenya Mountain Running sub-committee coordinator, Peter Angwenyi revealed that the team will be flagged off on Monday, June 5 by AK top officials and will depart the same day.

Meanwhile, it is expected that up to 1400 athletes from over 60 nations will compete in the heart of the Alps.

Over four days of competition, men and women will compete in four different events – uphill mountain running, classic up and down mountain running, short trail and long trail. U20 men and women will compete in classic up and down mountain running.
