Brian Komen has exuded confidence ahead of toeing the startline at the African Games after beating Africa 1500m champion Abel Kipsang during the national trials.

It was a joyous celebration for Brian Komen at the African Games national trials where he beat Africa 1500m champion Abel Kipsang to take the top prize in the 1500m.

Komen has been known to silence bigwigs and his performance at the Nyayo National Stadium was no different as he stunned experienced Kipsang. The duo now goes to the African Games with lofty ambitions.

The 25-year-old will be hoping to qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris, France and he also hopes to bag a gold medal at the continental showpiece in Accra, Ghana. After the national trials, Komen disclosed that he would burn the midnight oil to ensure he achieves his targets.

“I will work on my speed and endurance…they need sharpening. God knows what He has planned for me but I’m targeting gold. If I win a gold medal I’ll be very grateful,” he said.

Meanwhile, after crossing the finish line ahead of Kipsang, Komen noted that it has all been hard work and investing more time in training. He explained that the race was a tight ordeal and he had to dig deep for the win.

“I was doing well and was well prepared for the last 200m. I usually work on my endurance and the final kick…that’s one way to beat your opponent in the last 200m.

“You have to prepare yourself in the kick and speed and everything will be easy on your side…I also appreciate my coach for his dedication,” Komen said.

He started his 2024 with the indoor tour, competing in the 1500m and 2000m races. He started with the Sparkassen Indoor Meeting Dortmund where he finished second before finishing eighth and fourth respectively at the Czech Indoor Gala and Metz Moselle Athleor. He then proceeded to finish ninth in the 2000m at the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais Trophée EDF.
