Christian Coleman's Struggles Raises Doubts

Stephen Awino 09:30 - 18.06.2025

Former World Champion Christian Coleman has had a sluggish start to his 2025 campaign.

American sprinter Christian Coleman is looking like a shadow of his former self after a sluggish start to his 2025 campaign.

Six years ago, Coleman was on top of the world after his 9.76-second finish in Doha, a statement of intent as he dominated the track.

Coleman ignited, leaving stadiums hushed in awe and opponents in his dust.

Coleman Past His Best?

Times have changed as the spotlight now shines on his rivals like Noah Lyles and Kenny Bednarek, and the 29-year-old Coleman has yet to win an individual track event this year.

His sole victory came in the 4x100m relay at the Tom Jones Memorial in April and he is now known more for his relatiopship with Sha'Carri Richardson than winning races.

More recently, he finished second in the 100m final at the Star Athletics Sprint Series, prompting a blunt assessment from American track Coach Rob.

In a recent YouTube video as quoted by Essentially Sports, Coach Rob highlighted Coleman's struggles, stating, "He doesn’t have any more medals of any color from that 2019 moment up until now. He’s still competing on the pro circuit."

The coach's words underscore a stark reality. At the Star Athletics Sprint Series, Coleman suffered a series of unexpected defeats.

He was bested by 18-year-old high school phenom Maurice Gleaton Jr. in the prelims and then by Brandon Hicklin in the final.

For an athlete who once outpaced Usain Bolt at the World Championships, these results are difficult to reconcile.

"Maybe he (Coleman) will get a medal. But then again, maybe he won’t. Again, it just is what it is."

Coleman Seeking Redemption

Coleman has set his sights on making Team USA for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

Expectations remain high for the former world champion, but his performances haven't matched the hype.

Undeterred, Coleman responded in May with a message of resilience on social media.

"First few races haven’t gone exactly as expected. But the good thing is I know what I’m capable of I feel it every day in practice," he wrote.

He added, "The challenge is pulling that out and putting it on the track. Enjoying the process and the journey I believe in me.
