Athletics Kenya Masters team shine at Speed Masters Athletics Challenge

The Athletics Kenya Masters team of two that represented the country at the Speed Masters Athletics Challenge 2024 in Shkodra, Albania amassed eight medals (seven gold and two bronze).

The Athletics Kenya Masters team that represented the country at the Speed Masters Athletics Challenge 2024 in Shkodra, Albania did not fail to impress as they amassed eight medals.

The team jetted back into the country on Friday night and received a red-carpet reception following their dominant exploits in Albania.

The team comprised two athletes, Grace Kidake and Simon Loisiaboi, who dug deep to fly the country’s flag high, winning seven gold medals and one bronze during the three-day challenge that was organized by the Albania Masters athletics in conjunction with European Masters Athletics-EMA.

Kidake, 39, won three individual gold medals in 200m, 400m and 800m. The former national 400m champion also teamed up with Great Britain to win the 4×800m and the 4×400m relays and with her impeccable performance, she managed to finish fourth position overall.

Speaking after her arrival in the country, Kidake was over the moon, expressing her excitement towards winning the medals and extended a hand of gratitude to Athletics Kenya, the Ministry of Sports and her family.

She noted that the more they keep running, they will get exposure and will be able to post faster times and even break records.

“Age is just a number and it usually depends on what you do in training. I want to thank Athletics Kenya for always walking with us and showing us the way.

“The ministry has also played a huge role in supporting us and holding our hand as we went to compete. My husband, coach, and my parents have also played a huge role in my success and I’m grateful,” Kidake said.

Loisiaboi who is 50 years of age, grabbed two gold medals in men’s 400m and 800m and settled for a bronze medal in the 200m race.

“This is a dream come true and I thank AK and my bosses for allowing me to go and compete. Dr. Rose Tata Muya has walked with me and I’m also thankful to her,” he said.

The two athletes will now shift focus on preparing for the World Masters Athletics Championships that will be staged at Gothenburg, Sweden from August 13 to 25.
