Nelly Chepchirchir has broken her silence after narrowly missing out on a podium place in the women’s 1500m final at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

The 22-year-old has been in impressive form so far this season and was a favourite to win, but faded to a fourth-place finish in a personal best time of 3:55.25. Faith Kipyegon won her fifth title, clocking 3:52.15 to cross the finish line.

Dorcus Ewoi, competing in her first World Championship, crossed the finish line in second, clocking a personal best time of 3:54.92. Australia’s Jessica Hull rounded up the podium in 3:55.16.

The Kenyan youngster revealed that she was elated to make the final, noting that she was praying hard to see her compatriots in the race too.

Susan Ejore missed the final after finishing seventh in the semifinal, crossing the finish line in 4:09.28. Dorcus Ewoi, Faith Kipyegon and Nelly Chepchirchir, however, represented the Kenyan flag there.

Nelly Chepchirchir revealed that despite missing the medal in the final, she is glad to have clocked a personal best time.

“The race was good because since the first day, we were praying so hard to make the finals. After we ran these finals, I appreciate today’s results so much. Despite not winning, I have clocked a personal best,” Nelly Chepchirchir said after the race.

“This season has been good to me, and there is nothing to regret because I have made the final. I’m excited for them, and I’m proud because they have won a medal.”

Nelly Chepchirchir started her season with the mile road at the Adizero: Road to Records, clocking 4:23.99 to win the race.

She proceeded to the Diamond League Meeting in Doha, Qatar, where she won the 1500m in 4:05.00. Nelly Chepchirchir then claimed top honours in the women’s 1500m in 3:58.04 at the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat.

Nelly Chepchirchir reigned supreme in Paris, clocking 3:57.02 and then later claimed top honours at the Diamond League Meeting in Monaco, in a time of 2:29.77.

Competing at the Trials for World Athletics Championships Tokyo 2025, Nelly Chepchirchir claimed the win in the 1500m in 4:05.09.

Chepchirchir then rounded up the podium in 3:57.35 in Brussels, before crowning her Diamond League campaign with a win in Zurich in 3:56.99 and then headed to the World Athletics Championships.
