In a high-stakes clash with significant top-four implications, United started aggressively and were rewarded with an early goal.

Matheus Cunha found the net with a deflected left-footed shot after his initial attempt was blocked, giving the hosts a deserved lead. Their early dominance continued, and they doubled their advantage before the 15-minute mark.

Benjamin Sesko, after being denied by goalkeeper Freddie Woodman from close range, was perfectly positioned to score when Woodman parried a Bruno Fernandes header against him, with the ball then trickling over the line.

Liverpool struggled to gain a foothold in the first half, though Cody Gakpo came close to cutting the deficit with a curling effort that flew just wide of the post. United, however, remained on the front foot, with Fernandes nearly adding a third with a half-volley that narrowly missed its target.

The halftime whistle came as a relief for Liverpool, who were fortunate to be only two goals down after a subpar performance, despite a late save forced from United's Senne Lammens by Ryan Gravenberch.

The visitors emerged a different team after the break. Arne Slot's side capitalised on a mistake from halftime substitute Amad Diallo, as Dominik Szoboszlai intercepted a pass, drove forward, and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner. Just ten minutes later, Liverpool completed an astonishing comeback.

Another United error, this time a misplaced pass from Lammens, was seized upon by Alexis Mac Allister, who set up Szoboszlai to assist Gakpo for a simple tap-in into an empty net.

With the momentum seemingly lost, Manchester United rallied in the final stages to reclaim the lead. A Luke Shaw cross was only partially cleared by the Liverpool defence, and Kobbie Mainoo pounced on Mac Allister's weak clearance at the edge of the box, sweeping the ball into the bottom corner to the delight of the Stretford End.

Liverpool pushed for a late equaliser, with Gakpo testing Lammens again, but United held firm to secure a vital win and a top-five finish, strengthening Michael Carrick's case for the permanent managerial role. While a blow, the defeat is unlikely to derail Liverpool's top-five ambitions, as they maintain a six-point cushion with three matches left to play.
