'I Won’t Repeat 2021 Mistakes'- Rai Benjamin Sends Warning in 400m Hurdles Ahead of World Athletics Championship 2025 Semifinals
American sprinter and hurdler Rai Benjamin is brimming with confidence as he stormed into the 400m hurdles semifinals at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.
The reigning Olympic champion clocked a smooth 48.15 in Heat 4, easily booking his seat for the semis and signaling that he is ready to defend his supremacy over the event.
Benjamin enters the competition riding an incredible wave of momentum from his gold-medal campaign at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he captured top honors in both the 400m hurdles and the 4x400m relay.

The 28-year-old New York-born athlete's gold in the hurdles was especially sweet, as he toppled Norway’s Karsten Warholm — the world record holder and his longtime rival — who had beaten him in a record-breaking thriller in Tokyo 2021.
Now back in Tokyo, Benjamin is keen to make a statement and it was evidence when he took to Instagram after his victory to share a series of images from his race, alongside a confident caption that has fired up fans and hinted at unfinished business with Warholm.
“Coming second (at Tokyo 2020) put me in a bit of distress but I think it taught me a lot, so coming back here is special. It was my first Olympics. But I've been in this sport for six, seven years now. Having that experience and knowing what it feels like to be out here is the difference. I'm pretty confident," Benjamin said, via Olympics.com.
The American has put together a stellar season leading up to the championships.
Victories at the Paris and Stockholm Diamond League stops showcased his form, while his 46.89s performance at the USATF Nationals secured his World Championships berth and reaffirmed his dominance over the distance.
Clash of Titans Awaits in the Semifinals
Benjamin’s semifinal heat is shaping up to be a thriller, with Jamaica’s Roshawn Clarke (SB: 48.02) and Great Britain’s Alastair Chalmers (SB: 48.30) also lining up alongside him.
The qualification rules allow the first two finishers from each semifinal plus the two fastest times outside the automatic spots to progress to the final.
With Benjamin holding the world-leading 46.54 season best and Warholm likely looming in the next round, all eyes will be on this clash of titans.
Brazil’s Alison dos Santos (46.65 SB), Qatar’s Bassem Hemeida (48.38), Botswana’s Victor Ntweng (48.54), Costa Rica’s Gerald Drummond (48.81), and Turkey’s Berke Akçam (48.46) round out the list of key contenders who could also push for the remaining final spots.
Redemption in Tokyo
Benjamin's first major global gold came here as part of the USA’s 4x400m relay team, but he also suffered the heartbreak of finishing just behind Warholm in the 2021 Olympic final despite running a then-world-record-breaking time.
This time, Benjamin insists that he will not repeat the same mistakes. His measured yet confident words — paired with his recent performances — suggest that he is not only ready to defend his Olympic crown but to cement his status as the undisputed king of the 400m hurdles.
