Gor Mahia Duo Apologise, Promise to Shape Up Following Sofapaka Loss Ahead of Crunch Sofapaka Encounter
Gor Mahia players Byrne Omondi and Philemon Otieno have apologised to fans after their shock defeat to Bidco United and vowed to respond positively when K’Ogalo face Sofapaka in a crucial league clash this Saturday, September 27.
The 20-time FKF Premier League champions endured a disappointing start to the campaign under new Ghanaian head coach Charles Akonnor, who suffered defeat in his first competitive game in charge.
Gor Mahia were undone by a late penalty at the weekend, allowing Bidco United to snatch a dramatic 1-0 victory and leaving supporters frustrated after a trophyless 2023/24 season.

‘We Are Sorry’
Speaking in the aftermath of the loss, club captain Philemon Otieno admitted that the players fell short of expectations but called on fans to remain patient and supportive.
“To our fans, I know you expected us to start on a high, but sometimes in football results don’t always go as planned,” Otieno said. “My message is simple: keep supporting the team. The league is a marathon, and I can assure you that we are on course. We will give our very best to get the results, starting with our next match on Saturday against Sofapaka.”
Goalkeeper Byrne Omondi, who signed from Bandari off season, echoed the same sentiments, expressing disappointment but also optimism ahead of the upcoming fixture. “We are disappointed by that result, but we promise to bounce back,” Omondi said. “I know you guys are disappointed, but I promise you we will bounce back for this game.”
What Next For Gor Mahia?
The calls for calm come at a time when the pressure is mounting on Akonnor, who was brought in to restore Gor Mahia’s dominance after a difficult season.
The former Black Stars coach has been tasked with rebuilding a squad capable of reclaiming the league title and competing strongly in continental competitions. However, the defeat to Bidco raised concerns over whether K’Ogalo are fully settled under his leadership.
A second consecutive defeat could see pressure intensify not just on Akonnor but also on senior players to step up and deliver. On the other hand, a convincing victory would ease nerves and restore belief in the new project under the Ghanaian tactician.
