Harambee Stars goalkeeper Byrne Omondi has reflected on his 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN) heroics that won him the Sports Journalist Association of Kenya (SJAK) Sports Personality of the Month Award.
Omondi was among the most standout players for Kenya during the tournament, which the country co-hosted alongside Uganda and Tanzania. He started four of Kenya’s five games, keeping two clean sheets, and earning the man of the match award during the shock 1-0 win over Morocco.
During the quarter finals, where Kenya were knocked out on penalties by Madagascar, he made one huge save from the penalty spot, but it ultimately was not enough to give Kenya the lead.

Omondi, who previously turned out for Tusker, Mathare United, KCB, Bandari, Posta Rangers, and Agro Chemicals, will wear the green jersey for Gor Mahia this season after joining the record champions as a free agent.
“We have already started training. I want to push myself to win more awards like these. It was a good experience and a great opportunity for everyone. Given that it was in Kenya, the fans boosted us massively.”
The goalkeeper admitted the clash against Morocco, which they won 1-0 thanks to a Ryan Ogam winner with 10 men, was always going to be the toughest test, but credited the squad’s mentality and support from the nation’s leadership.
