The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) confirmed that both parties had agreed to a mutual separation, marking the conclusion of Grant’s stint that began with high expectations in December 2022.

The decision comes as Zambia prepares for a tough AFCON campaign in Group A, where they will face hosts Morocco, Mali, and Comoros.

FAZ General Secretary Machacha Shepande announced the development in a statement, emphasizing that the separation was amicable and intended to help chart a new course for the national team.

“The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has agreed to mutually separate with Zambia Senior Men’s National Team coach Avram Grant. The two parties agreed to mutually separate with FAZ wishing Mr. Grant the best of luck in his future endeavours,” Shepande says.

“The rest of the details will be communicated in due course. For now can only thank Mr. Grant for his contribution to the Zambian game,” he stated.

Grant, who took over on December 22, 2022, had signed a two-year contract that was set to expire at the end of 2024.

Under his guidance, Zambia managed to qualify for consecutive AFCON tournaments — a feat that had eluded the Chipolopolo in recent years. His tenure saw renewed hope among supporters that the 2012 African champions could once again challenge at the highest level of African football.

Despite achieving qualification milestones, Grant’s time at the helm was not without its challenges.

The team’s inconsistent performances in competitive fixtures and friendlies raised concerns among fans and pundits alike.

Critics often pointed to the side’s defensive vulnerabilities and lack of cutting-edge finishing as key weaknesses that remained unresolved.

Nevertheless, Grant’s experience, having previously managed Chelsea, Portsmouth, and the Ghana national team — brought a level of professionalism and structure to the Zambian setup.

His appointment had initially been seen as a statement of intent by FAZ, aimed at reviving the Chipolopolo’s competitive edge on the continental stage.

Zambia’s participation in Group A of the upcoming AFCON will test their resilience and adaptability.

Facing hosts Morocco, perennial contenders Mali, and the unpredictable Comoros, the Chipolopolo will need to hit top form quickly to progress from what is widely considered one of the tournament’s toughest groups.
