The 3000m record was set by Junxia Wang in 1993, when she clocked 8:06.11 to win the race in Beijing, China, and Kipyegon's main intention going into the race was to shatter the record, but she fell short, clocking 8:07.04.

Likina Amebaw finished second in a time of 8:34.53 as another Ethiopian Aleshign Baweke, rounded up the podium in a time of 8:34.53.

The race started with Faith Kipyegon following the pace setters closely as they crossed the 400m mark, with Ethiopia's Mekedesh Alemesete following closely. Japan's Nozomi Tanaka was running in third.

As the athletes passed the 800m mark, Faith Kipyegon was still in the lead, looking very comfortable with the Japanese now running behind her. The 1200m mark saw the two athletes still maintain their position, with America's Karissa Schweizer having climbed to third.

Jessica Hull dropped as they passed the 2000m mark, with Faith Kipyegon now taking the lead, with Nozomi Tanaka still holding onto her. Another Ethiopian, Likina Amebaw, was running in third place.

Faith Kipyegon, the 1500m world record holder, was now flying at this point, as she opened a huge gap between herself and her closest challengers. Amebaw Likina had now taken second place but was nowhere close to the three-time Olympic champion.

Faith Kipyegon continued her relentless pursuit that finally paid off with the second-fastest 3000m in history.

Faith Kipyegon started her 2025 season at the Sirikwa Classic Cross Country before making her track debut at the Diamond League Meeting in Xiamen, where she competed over the 1000m.

She clocked 2:29.21 before beginning her preparations to become the first woman to run under four minutes in the mile, in a project by Nike, labelled Breaking4.

"I have proven that it is possible, it is only a matter of time," Faith Kipyegon said at the time. "If it is not me, it will be somebody else. I will not lose hope, I will still go for it. I hope I will get it one day."
