After Zech Obiero’s Bright Kenya Debut, Micah Obireo Knocks on the Door With Hat-Trick for English Club
With Harambee Stars wasting several chances in their most recent outing at the FIFA Series, could another Obiero be part of the solution?
Coach Benni McCarthy admitted to being worried about his team’s poor finishing in their matches against Estonia and Grenada and as he looks forward to getting more time on the training group to improve his striking department, Micah Obiero is also staking claim.
Micah is the elder brother of Zech Obiero, who made his Harambee Stars debut in the 1-1 draw against Estonia last Friday, impressing with an assist for the equaliser, before scoring his first goal for Kenya in their 3-0 win over Grenada on Monday.
Just a day after his brother opened his account for Kenya, Micah scored a hat-trick for his English club Wealdstone as they thrashed Hartlepool 7-0 in the National League, England’s fifth tier, on Tuesday.
Micah Obiero Shreds Hartlepool
Micah delivered a stunning first-half hat-trick as Wealdstone defied recent form to hand Hartlepool the crushing defeat at Grosvenor Vale.
The Stones, who had entered the match on a three-game losing streak in the National League, immediately seized control against a Hartlepool side that had won their last three. Micah opened the scoring just four minutes in, finding the net from a tight angle.
The hosts quickly doubled their advantage when Dylan Kadji converted a cross from Anthony Georgiou. Micah then took centre stage with two rapid-fire goals. He first pounced on a rebound in the 22nd minute before completing his treble by racing clear, rounding goalkeeper Nick Hayes, and slotting the ball into an empty net.
Wealdstone, who had never previously beaten Hartlepool in seven attempts, continued their relentless assault. Before halftime, Anthony Georgiou made it 5-0, reacting fastest after Hayes could only parry a shot from Nathan Tshikuna.
Should McCarthy Consider Older Obiero?
The misery continued for the visitors in the second half. Captain Enzio Boldewijn added a sixth in the 70th minute with a deflected strike. The rout was completed when a shot from substitute Olufela Olomola took a deflection off a defender and found its way past the beleaguered Hayes, sealing a historic seventh goal for Wealdstone.
While still too early, Micah’s heroics will ignite debate over whether McCarthy should cast his net wide in search of strikers as he builds towards the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Micah has an impressive tally of 13 goals and four assists in 45 games for Wealdstone this season, eight of them in his last eight matches, and while the club are stuck in the midtable, his outlay could earn him a move to a higher league which would boost his chances of making the Kenyan team in future.
