Zech Obiero and Clarke Oduor Earn High Praise After Outstanding Harambee Stars Outing
Harambee Stars midfielder Zech Obiero has been lauded following his starring role for Kenya in the just-concluded FIFA Series in Kigali, Rwanda.
Obiero made his long-awaited Kenyan debut during the four-team tournament, playing his first match against Estonia on Friday when he created the chance that led to Kenya’s equaliser as they drew 1-1 before losing 5-4 on post-match penalties.
He would score his debut goal for Kenya on Monday, netting late in their 3-0 win over Grenada. The Tranmere Rovers star was a joy to watch on the ball, getting Kenya moving in attack with his sleek passing and vision and Harambee Stars boss Benni McCarthy is happy that he took a chance on him.
“Zech, very positive, bright player. Wants to get on the ball all the time, very offensive and running at players and making things happen and I think that is what we need,” McCarthy said of Obiero. “He has been a breath of fresh air and a really good addition.”
McCarthy on Impact of Players Born Abroad
McCarthy was also thrilled to see Clarke Oduor also play after handing the midfielder a start against Grenada.
“Clarke today he could have had one of the easiest goals five minutes in a Kenyan shirt. He could have had a goal, so it was a bit unfortunate for him in that sense,” he added.
The South African coach feels vindicated by his decision to call up some of the foreign-born players as he believes their presence has rubbed off positively on the rest.
“When we bring players and see the technical levels and qualities, they don’t lose the ball, do the right things and make simple things look good and I think that is what the national team needs and when players around them learn and pick something,” McCarthy further stated.
