‘Cloud Hanging Over My Head’ - Benni McCarthy on What Worries Him About Harambee Stars
Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has opened up about one major concern for his team after watching them during the 2026 FIFA Series matches against Grenada and Estonia.
Kenya started their campaign with a 5-4 post-match penalty loss to Estonia on Friday after a 1-1 draw in regulation time to miss a chance to play the final and in the third-place playoff, they beat Grenada 3-0 on Monday.
However, in both matches, Kenya squandered a number of open chances which would have seen them win by a bigger margin, something that has left McCarthy in a spot of bother.
“Happy that we were able to convert a couple of chances that we created and scored and deservedly won the game but still a cloud hanging over my head,” McCarthy said after the game.
“If I assess us against Senegal, they made eight-nine chances and scored eight goals. Today, we created 11 clear-cut chances so for me, that is a little bit of a worry. We are not able to finish games off.
McCarthy Calls for Clinical Edge
“We had the chances that we had and we didn't score so yeah so should be happy with 3-0 but if you look at the other side of things, how do you create as many chances and don’t score.”
McCarthy has fired a warning to his team, telling them to improve their finishing otherwise they may end up losing matches that they should easily be winning.
“Next team, we will not be lucky as we were today,” he added. “Against Estonia, we also created chances and should have won the game and we should have been playing in the next match [final].”
It was not all gloom for the South African coach, however, as he picked some positives from the game on Monday.
“Happy for the boys and happy that they were able to pick themselves up and win the game. We take it and learn and hopefully we can improve and take positives from this match and look forward,” said the ex-Manchester United attacking coach.
