Zech Obiero Reveals Impact of His Gor Mahia-Loving Father After Bright Harambee Stars Debut
Zech Obiero enjoyed a great debut for Harambee Stars when he starred in Kenya’s 1-1 draw against Estonia in the FIFA Series on Friday.
Obiero, who was handed a start on his debut, played a key role as he threaded in the pass that led to the equaliser before Ryan Ogam scored for Kenya and he also created two good chances for his teammates which were not converted.
The midfielder, currently on loan at Tranmere Rovers from Leyton Orient, is not entirely new to Kenya as he has featured for the Kenya U20 team but was given his first senior team call-up for the FIFA Series.
Obiero credits his father Henry Obiero, a former Gor Mahia player, for encouraging him to switch allegiance to Kenya, having been born in London and also eligible to represent England.
“My dad played in Kenya and football is all we know as a family and my brother plays football as well. To represent your country is one of every footballer’s dream so I can call Kenya home and this is a massive honour for me,” Obiero told FKF Media.

“My dad is so important, he taught me everything I know, always encouraged me to play for Kenya and played in Kenya for one of the biggest teams.
“He told me about Kenya, how they like to play and enjoy football and the love for the game so that really encouraged me when I was younger and I told him time and time again I want to play for Kenya and so the opportunity is here so very happy.”
Obiero, whose brother Micah is also a footballer, admits it was a proud moment for his family when he finally made his Harambee Stars debut and hopes it is the start of many good things to come.
“He is very proud that I am playing for the country he was born in and very proud moment for him and the rest of my family that is in Kenya,” he added.
The midfielder is enjoying a career revival in the second half of this season after moving on loan to Tranmere Rovers in January where he is now playing consistently, having struggled for game time at Leyton Orient.
