Kilifi County Governor Gideon Mung’aro was one of the members present at the launch of the event.
The first ever beach games in Kenya are set to be held at the Buntwani Park in Malindi from March 18 to 19.
The event has been organised by the National Olympic Committee of Kenya in partnership with the County Government of Kilifi. The event is intended to enable Kenyan beach athletes to get a chance and compete.
Kilifi County Governor Gideon Mung’aro was one of the members present at the launch of the event and he welcomed the NOC-K delegation with open arms.
On her part, Deputy Governor Flora Mbetsa expressed her gratitude towards being given the privilege to host the event. She pledged her support to all the athletes who were going to take part in the event.
“We are humbled as a county that the NOC-K Beach Games will be coming to Malindi. All roads in Kilifi County will lead to Buntwani Park. The whole county is behind NOC-K and all Kenyan Beach athletes,” she said.
Meanwhile NOC-K has also selected the Athletes Commission who will ensure the athletes viewpoint remains at the heart of NOCK's activities and strengthen the support to athletes.
The commission will also serve as the link between athletes and NOC-K Executives. It advises the NOCK Executive Board on matters athletes' welfare.
They include Humphrey Kayange who will chair the committee, two-time world 5000m champion Hellen Obiri, hockey star Gilly Okumu, weightlifter Wilkister Nyoro, basketball star George Darril, triathlete Joseph Okal, Mercy Moim of Mailkia Strikers and rugby sevens player Andrew Amonde.
