Is the Sports Ministry really a place for jokers? That is exactly what a Senator seemed to suggest when he called on the President to transfer a CS to the docket.
Amid the uproar that has greeted the brutal murder of activist and blogger Albert Ojwang, sports has been indirectly dragged into the matter.
Ojwang was killed in police custody last week with the post-mortem report revealing that he was hit on the head and his death was likely to have been caused by assault, which has raised anger among Kenyans with calls for those responsible to be brought to book.
The uproar saw the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen appear before the Senate on Wednesday to explain what led to Ojwang’s death and what the state is doing about it.

But it is during the submissions of the senators that sports was dragged into the mud as Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei seemed to suggest it is not a serious docket.

While hitting out at Murkomen, for what he termed failings by the CS, Cherargei called on President William Ruto to transfer the former Elgeyo Marakwet Senator from the powerful Interior docket to the Sports Ministry which he claims is a place for jokers.
“It is high time that the President must do a reshuffle, take the Cabinet Minister of Interior back to sports because he likes kuleta mchezo [to joke] with the business that we are discussing about this country. We will not sit and allow this to happen, everybody must be held to account,” Cherargei said on the floor of the Senate.
Murkomen served as Sports CS for over four months from August to December 2024 before he was transferred to the Interior Ministry.
