The next scheduled inter-school golf tournament event will be held on April 11 at the Sigona Golf Club.

Junior golfers in Kenya are demanding more school competitions as it is bound to level up their game.

The players were speaking following a successful 2023 U.S. Kids Golf Spring Local Tour held at Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club on Sunday.

One of the participants, Hazel Kuria, who emerged as the winner of the girls and boys 15-18 years category, called upon the upcoming golfers from different schools in the country to engage in the sport so that there could be more of such tournaments.

“If you play golf, just make the school aware, tell them that the tournaments are happening, and get yourself involved because golf is the best way first to gain new friends and help with the future,” she said.

Mary Nyambura, who participated in the girls 11-12 years category, backed Kuria, saying that her school should consider such tournaments.

“Unfortunately, my school (Rose of Sharon Academy) has not yet built a team but I hope in the future we will. Some of my friends would like to join golf and they want to start soon,” said Nyambura.

The non-handicapped junior tournament attracted 144 junior golfers drawn from 19 schools around Nairobi and its environs.

“It was so much fun. I didn’t know there were so many junior golfers because not many of them sign up for the US Kids golf series, so seeing close to 20 schools represented was very interesting,” Hazel added.

The event's sponsors, NCBA Bank, through their Assistant Marketing Director Jackie Muhatia, noted that such tournaments are bearing fruit judging from what is happening in the events.

“We witnessed excitement among the schools in playing against each other. We are seeing a lot more interest, a lot more investment coming through and this is as a result of the collaboration that is coming through from all the partners,” she said.

In selected results, Mwathi Gicheru won the 12-year-old category with 76 strokes, followed by Aidan Gachora and Andrew Gathere.

Amar Shah won in the 11-year-old category with 73 strokes, followed by Kahir Ladak and Alpha Ndungu.

In the 13-14-year-old category, Imani Njoki won with 99 strokes, with Navya Nagda in second and Hena Shah in third.
