As the world celebrates International Women's Day, Pulse Sports takes a look into the women, young and old, who are shaping the world of sport and showing that anything is possible.
From track and field to the football pitches, women have defied all odds and taken up spaces. Double world record holder Faith Kipyegon, Harambee Starlets coach Beldine Odemba, and tennis sensation Angela Okutoyi are some of the women who have taken the world of sport.
Celebrating phenomenal women who have taken the world of sport by storm.
1) Angela Okutoyi

Angela Okutoyi certainly makes it to the list of women who have taken the world of sports by storm. Okutoyi, just at 20 years old, has managed to make a name for herself in the world of tennis and she is going far.
She became the first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam title at the girls’ juniors Wimbledon event partnering Rose Marie Nijkamp. At the 2022 Australian Open, Okutoyi became the first representative of Kenya to win a girls’ junior singles Grand Slam match.
On the ITF Circuit, she has won two singles and three doubles titles. Playing for Kenya Billie Jean King Cup team, Okutoyi has a win/loss record of 11–5.

2) Faith Kipyegon

The mother of one has proven that anything is possible and she is certainly an inspiration to women and girls from across the globe. Kipyegon has achieved so many accolades and is currently a double world record holder (one mile and 1500m) and a double World champion (5000m and 1500m).
Kipyegon is also a two-time Olympic champion and she will be eyeing her third Olympic title at this year’s Olympic Games in Paris, France. Off the track, Kipyegon is a loving mother to her daughter Alyn and is also a wife.
3) Sharon Chepchumba

Sharon Chepchumba could not miss on the list of the sensational women who are making huge strides in the world of sports. The Malkia Strikers opposite attacker has been the epitome of hard work and sacrifice and it has certainly paid off well for her.
From playing for KCB, Chepchumba has also managed to trade her talent to top-flight Greek clubs. She first signed with Aris Thessaloniki before moving to Greek giants PAOK Thessaloniki.
Malkia Strikers have since qualified for the Olympic Games and Chepchumba will be sure to don the Team Kenya jersey and play well.
4) Beldine Odemba

Beldine Odemba is surely a force to be reckoned with and she has cemented her name in the world of football coaching. She currently heads the women’s national football team, Harambee Starlets.
Odemba came to the limelight after leading Highway Secondary School to the A final of the East African Games in 2022 having dominated the national school games. Odemba also guides the Kenya Women's Premier League (KWPL) side Kenya Police.
5) Alexandra Ndolo

Alexandra Ndolo is the epitome of resilience owing to her ability to always work hard and keep going despite the tons of challenges she has faced.
Ndolo is a German-born left-handed épée fencer who started fencing for Kenya in 2022. During her time representing Germany, she competed at the 2013 Summer Universiade held in Kazan, Russia, and also competed in the women's épée event at the World Fencing Championships in 2015, 2017, and 2019.

How the National Olympic Committee seeks to prioritise the 'voice of the athletes'
The National Olympic Committee president Paul Tergat has shared how they plan to ensure the welfare of athletes is taken seriously following Alexandra Ndolo's online outbursts.
Ndolo also won the silver medal in the women's épée event at the 2017 European Fencing Championships held in Tbilisi, Georgia, and also won one of the bronze medals in her event at the 2019 European Fencing Championships held in Düsseldorf, Germany. She also competed at the 2022 European Fencing Championships held in Antalya, Turkey.
She won the silver medal in the women's épée event at the 2022 World Fencing Championships held in Cairo, Egypt. At the moment, she is vying for a ticket to the Olympic Games in Paris, France.
6) Beatrice Chebet

Reigning World Cross-country champion Beatrice Chebet has also proven to be one of the most consistent runners of all time. From winning medals to breaking world records, Chebet has proven to women that anything is possible.
Chebet, the World 5000m bronze medallist is just getting started and she will hope to make an appearance to the Olympic Games this year. She broke the 5km world record on New Year’s Eve to prove that her fans should be ready for more this season.
7) Priscilla Mburu
Priscilla Mburu is one of the Kenyan women taking the world of sports. Mburu took the leap of faith in the world of shooting and she is now looking forward to making her maiden appearance at the Olympic Games in Paris, France.
She attended the Kenya Police Training College, Kiganjo and in May 2022, Priscilla was awarded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Scholarship.
Currently, the police officer is pursuing an undergraduate degree in counseling psychology at Salt Lake Bible College in the United States.
8) Janeth Jepkosgei
)
From becoming the second Kenyan woman to win a world title over the 800m to mentoring athletes for global stardom, Janeth Jepkosgei has defined the world of athletics. She is one of the bold women who transitioned from running to coaching, a rare move for female athletes in Kenya.
The mother of one has now embraced her new role as a mentor and coach for over 80 juniors from primary and high schools who frequented the training camp. She had established the camp to provide young runners with a nurturing and enjoyable environment during school holidays.
9) Grace Adhiambo

Grace Adhiambo is the current Kenya Lionesses captain and she has worked her way up to earn that title. Adhiambo discovered rugby while playing football in primary school.
In 2016, she made her debut for Kenya's Sevens team at 17, just as the Kenya Sevens team made their debut at the Women’s Sevens Series in France.
Adhiambo was the only scorer against Fiji in their placing match at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast and she also played a crucial role in her team's qualification for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo as she was a dependable try-scorer during their qualifiers in Tunisia.

In 2021, Adhiambo made her 15s debut in the Lionesses 2021 Rugby World Cup qualifying match against Colombia in Nairobi. She scored five points from a conversion, and a penalty in her side’s loss.
Adhiambo signed with the Japanese, Kitakyushu-based, club Nagato Blue Angels on a six-month contract at the beginning of 2023.
