Elizabeth Cassidy played a key role as the KCB Chess Club extended their unbeaten run in the Kenya Chess Premier League.

Eight-time champions KCB Chess Club have maintained their hot streak at the 2024/2025 Kenya Chess Premier League, remaining unbeaten after nine rounds.

Currently, they sit comfortably at the top of the league table with 25 points following their dominant exploits over the weekend.

KCB Chess Club managed to secure a strong 4.5-0.5 victory over Nairobi Chess Academy before battling to a tightly contested 2.5-2.5 draw against perennial rivals Equity Bank.

Speaking after the weekend fixtures, Candidate Master and head coach Benjamin Magana, lauded the team’s effort, noting that the players will not stop at anything as they look to continue dominating the world of chess.

“We have built great momentum, and the players are hungry for victory. Staying unbeaten in this league is never easy, but our focus and discipline have made the difference. The goal is clear: we want to bring home a ninth title,” he said.

Rising star Elizabeth Cassidy undoubtedly stole the show with her composure and consistency on board.

Cassidy admitted that being up against some of the seasoned players forced her to come out of her comfort zone and think big.

“Playing alongside top players has pushed me to improve fast. Every match is a learning experience, and I am proud to contribute to the team’s success,” Cassidy said.

“I know the season is still far from over, but we want to continue winning to put KCB on the map. Not just in Kenya, but also in the world.”

In a tense encounter against Equity, Patrick Kawuma narrowly defeated KCB’s Joseph Methu on board one, while Robert McLigeyo held Mark Nyola to a hard-fought draw on board two.

KCB’s Martin Njoroge and Hawi Kaloki came through with vital victories on boards three and four, dispatching Kyle Kuka and Sasha Mongeli, respectively.

However, Equity’s Jadon Simiyu responded on board five, overcoming Joyce Nyaruai to balance the overall score and secure a draw for his team.

On Saturday, June 28, KCB delivered an outstanding performance of the season with a 4.5–0.5 thrashing of Nairobi Chess Academy (NACHA).

Candidate Master and head coach Ben Magana set the tone with a decisive win over Hillary Sagwa on board one. Ian Mutuge and Hugh Misiko followed suit, outplaying Aguda Lwanga and Trevor Mulindi on boards two and four.

Brian Irungu held Adol Makuach to a solid draw on board three, while promising talent Elizabeth Cassidy sealed the dominant win with a confident performance against Bella Nashipae on board five.
