Athletics prodigy Emmaculate Anyango, tennis star Angella Okutoyi and Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir have been feted for their outstanding performances in the last three months.

Kenya’s athletics prodigy Emmaculate Anyango has been recognised for her outstanding 2024 season so far after being feted alongside tennis ace Angella Okutoyi and marathoner Peres Jepchirchir.

The Sirikwa Classic Cross-country champion was awarded the Sports Personality of the Month award for February by the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) in conjunction with LG electronics on Tuesday after coming close to breaking the world 10km world record three months ago.

Anyango recorded the second fastest 10km time in history when she clocked 28:47 in Valencia, Spain, improving Ethiopian Yalemzerf Yehualaw’s world record (29.14) but unfortunately for her, compatriot Agnes Ngetich won the race in a better time of 28.46.

Meanwhile, African Games champion Okutoyi claimed the March award after making history by winning a first tennis gold for Kenya at the event since 1978 which saw her claim one of the four reserved Olympics slots for winners of various continental games.

Okutoyi, who beat Egyptian Lamis Abdelaziz with an impressive score of 6-4, 6-2, needs to be in the top 400 in the WTA rankings by the end of May to make it to Paris.

Olympic marathon champion Jepchirchir was feted with the monthly award for April following her record-breaking run at London Marathon.

Jepchirchir ran a tactical race to fend off her rivals and win in a time of 2:16:16, breaking compatriot Mary Keitany’s women’s-only world record of 2:17:01 set in 2017, which earned her a place in Kenya’s final marathon team to the Paris 2024 Olympics.
