The 37-year-old has reflected on his family's advice to leave Manchester United after Jose Mourinho's arrival.

Former Chelsea star Juan Mata has opened up about his strained relationship with Jose Mourinho and why his family advised him to leave Manchester United.

Juan Mata joined Manchester United from Chelsea in January 2014 for a fee of £37.1 million. During his time at Chelsea, the Spaniard fell out of favour with Jose Mourinho after two and a half seasons.

He won the Champions League, FA Cup and Europa League, but his time there was up, and he was forced to leave. He then joined Manchester United to seek more playing time.

The 37-year-old revealed that his grandfather advised him to leave Manchester United, since he was concerned about how Jose Mourinho would treat him.

When he fell out with Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, Juan Mata received limited playing time, and his grandfather was afraid that the same would happen at Manchester United.

“The first call that I received was from my family and from my grandad saying, ‘You have to leave. What's going to happen?’ Juan Mata said on the Fozcast podcast as quoted by the Daily Mail.

“And I said, ‘No, I'm going to see how it goes. I don't have any problem with him, and he doesn't have any problems with me.’ It is one of the things that I'm most proud of in my career is to have remained, to be calm and say, ‘No, I'm going to try to show that I can play in his style.’

“And I did so. Our relationship was very natural. Actually, we have a good relationship. I played games and we won things together. I played in all the finals, so I felt like an important player in his squad. My family told me, ‘OK, you were right,’ but they were panicking a little bit.”

Juan Mata ultimately chose to ignore his grandfather’s advice and stay, determined to earn his place in the squad. During his eight-year spell at the club, he made 285 appearances and lifted the Europa League, FA Cup, and League Cup.

Mata left Manchester United in June 2022 and later that year joined Turkish giants Galatasaray as a free agent. In 2023, he had a brief stint in Japan with Vissel Kobe, featuring just once.

Juan Mata currently plays for Australian side Western Sydney Wanderers, having signed with them in September 2024.
