Death hit Talanta Stadium site as AFCON 2027 preparations stall, sparking investigations and fears among workers over safety and justice.

Detectives in Nairobi have launched investigations into the gruesome death of 35-year-old Sammy Kyengo whose body was discovered at the Talanta City Stadium construction site in Jamhuri.

The father of one had been reported missing on September 6, sparking a frantic search by his family and friends across the city.

According to police, Kyengo’s body was found a week later on September 13, concealed in a water sump behind terraces that were still under construction.

Casual workers stumbled upon the remains while clearing the area in preparation for plastering, prompting an immediate suspension of work to secure the scene for investigators.

“He told me the company had refused to pay them since July. He wanted to claim his money and quit the job,” said Christine Kyengo, the grieving widow as per Citizen Digital.

She added that her husband’s phone had been offline since the day he vanished, raising fears early on that something sinister might have happened.

Scene of Crime Investigators reported that Kyengo had visible injuries on the back of the head and right side of the neck, with blood seen oozing from his nose and mouth.

Family Devastated, Colleagues Stunned

Kyengo’s relatives revealed that they had spent days moving between hospitals, police stations, and mortuaries in search of him, only to receive the devastating news on Saturday.

His nephew, Paul Kioko, who relied on him for school fees and rent, said the death had left him uncertain about his future.

“He has been supporting me with school fees and rent. I don’t know how I will manage now,” he lamented.

Fellow laborers remembered Kyengo as a peaceful man with no known disputes.

Many are now calling on the project managers and authorities to ensure workers’ safety at the site, noting that the case has left the entire workforce anxious.

Autopsy and Investigation Underway

Police have moved Kyengo’s body to the Nairobi Funeral Home for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Detectives are reviewing CCTV footage, speaking to colleagues, and gathering additional evidence to piece together his final moments.

Authorities have yet to disclose any suspects, but investigators are working with the hypothesis that the killing may have been linked to a dispute at work, given Kyengo’s complaints over delayed wages.

The Talanta City Stadium project managers confirmed that construction work remains suspended until police conclude their investigations.

Meanwhile, security at the site has been tightened as workers and residents demand justice for the slain father.
