Former Manchester City and Chelsea star implores the Major League Soccer to devise a new strategy.
Former Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Philips has warned the Major League Soccer leadership to devise a new strategy to increase viewership other than the current strategy of signing legendary footballers in the twilight of their careers.
The MLS is enjoying some of the most attention since its inception, following the arrival of Lionel Messi to sunny Miami. The Argentina international brought along with him other football legends like Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets to Inter Miami, and they have sold out stadiums everywhere they have played.

What Philips said
Speaking in a recent interview, Philips, who played in the MLS for the New York Red Bulls, believes that the strategy of signing superstars past their prime is unsustainable and implored the league commissioner, Don Garber, to explore new strategies.

“That is the thing with the way that America are doing it. They are getting a lot of big superstars when they are at the back end of their careers,” Shaun said, per Goal. “They build a lot of publicity around those players, whoever they may be. At the minute the kingpin is obviously Messi, but [Sergio] Busquets is there as well, [Luis] Suarez, Jordi Alba—they have got a lot of big names over there now.
“But when they do retire, they do the same thing again - they look for the next batch of players at that age. For a time that does raise the standard and publicity around it, but it’s short-lived. They need to find a longer fix and have a player of that calibre come to America and play his career there. They may have to create their own.”
Meanwhile, MLS clubs are doubling down on the current strategy, as Chicago Fire have been linked with a move for Manchester City’s midfielder Kevin de Bruyne. As Pulse Sports reported, they have already sent an offer to the Belgian but will have to rival the likes of Aston Villa, who are also interested.
