The tactician had hinted at leaving due to the club’s financial constraints but a lot has since changed after Tore Bobe secured a sponsor

Shabana FC have confirmed that coach Sammy Okoth will lead the team in the FKF Premier League next season having hinted that he could quit after the just-concluded campaign.

Okoth had been non-committal over his future last month after returning Tore Bobe to the top flight, saying he needed assurances that the club will not struggle financially like it has been in the National Super League, before making his decision.

A lot has changed since then with the club securing a sponsor, in the form of gaming firm Bangbet, plus the assurances of Kisii leaders that the team will be bankrolled. The club hierarchy believe Okoth is now convinced that everything is in place for a good top-flight campaign.

“We want to turn our players from beggars into professionals. Our players are not going to struggle because our accounts have already changed even minus the sponsor because the leaders and fans have supported us greatly,” said Shabana Secretary General Nyanchoka Kerama.

“We want to stay and in the Premier League next season and even win it if possible. I can assure you that our coach is going to be leading the technical bench and we will give him total support.

“We have given him that kind of freedom to prepare the squad. He is here with us to stay. We gave him all the time to concentrate on securing promotion then we will discuss about how to build the squad for the Premier League.”

Shabana secured promotion last month with four games to spare and put the icing on the case by winning the National Super League title at the weekend.

It was a remarkable season for the Glamour Boys who looked invincible, especially at home where they lost just one match all season, and finished with 73 points, four ahead of second-placed Murang’a Seal.

Shabana scored 54 goals, only bettered by Muranga’s 55, while conceding just 14 goals, the best in the division. Having experienced painful runs in their 17 years in the lower leagues, the team intends to strengthen in key areas with players with Premier League experience to avoid having it rough in the top flight.

“We do not expect to do a lot of changes, there are few gaps that we will fill because we want to give these boys an opportunity. They have struggled a lot to gain promotion and it is only fair that we give them that chance,” added Kerama.

“Even if we will improve the squad, it is just in a few areas. Now, we have 26 players in camp and some might leave for one reason or another so we might end up with seven to 10 positions to fill. We will do some kind of experienced signings.”
