'The VAR Part Cost Us' - Rising Stars Coach Reflects on Under-20 AFCON Exit and Lessons From Morocco

Rising Stars' coach blamed his team's lack of VAR experience for their early exit from the U-20 AFCON, particularly in their loss to Morocco.

Kenya’s Rising Stars endured a tough outing at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, bowing out of the tournament in the group stages.

The Kenyan youngsters had been pooled alongside Tunisia, Morocco and Nigeria and were expecting to make it past the group stages despite their inexperience.

Rising Stars opened their campaign against Morocco on a high but ended up losing 3-2. They had controlled the match and were on course to win, but Morocco turned things upside down and ran away with the win.

In their second match against Tunisia, they lost 3-1 before drawing 2-2 in their match against Nigeria. However, there were tons of lessons to be learnt from their defeat against Morocco and going forward, the Rising Stars.

Anthony Akhulia: I Think That the VAR Part Cost Us

Speaking in an interview with NTV’s Sport On, Anthony Akhulia revealed that the boys have tons of talent, but their inexperience against Morocco cost them.

Akhulia insisted that they had great control of the game but were not able to survive under pressure, something that Morocco managed effortlessly.

According to Anthony Akhulia, Morocco let the Rising Stars control the game, but they easily capitalised on their mistakes, something the Kenyan youngsters would not do.

“We had taken control of the game completely, and at some point, even with Morocco, there were some touches that completely made it difficult for them to cope,” Anthony Akhulia said.

“One thing I realised with those teams is their ability to manage themselves, they don’t work under pressure. They will even let you guys play, but they will always capitalise on our weaknesses.

“When we were leading, we did not manage ourselves well because we were playing in that tournament for the first time.”

Anthony Akhulia added that Rising Stars had no experience in how the VAR system works, and they would always want to hear the referee blow a whistle, which never happened.

They conceded a goal against Morocco during the match due to a lack of knowledge of how the VAR system works.

“That is where they beat us; even when we were leading, they were very relaxed and kept their cool. When we lost our focus a little bit, they pounced on that,” he said.

“For them, their leagues possibly have the VAR, while for us, we don’t have it. I think that the VAR part cost us because we were expecting the referee to whistle, but that did not happen. While we were still complaining, they would score, and then on checking the VAR, there was nothing.”

For Rising Stars to succeed in their next matches, Kenya must step up by investing in better youth development structures, competitive match experience, and modern tools like VAR training.

This will help the Rising Stars compete effectively on the continental stage and avoid repeat disappointments in future tournaments.
