Ruben Amorim stressed the need for improvement in one specific area of the pitch following their draw with Leeds in Stockholm.

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has called for significant improvement in midfield tempo and attacking quality following a goalless draw against Leeds United in a preseason friendly held in Stockholm.

Speaking to MUTV, Amorim was candid about his side's early preseason struggles:

“We struggled with our pressing because Leeds played long balls and won the second balls, causing problems for us. We lack speed, especially in midfield, and that showed. We struggled to move the ball forward,” he said.

“Despite that, we created chances. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but this was a good test.”

The game marked the debut of £62.5 million signing Matheus Cunha, who started as a left attacking midfielder. However, the Brazilian failed to make a major impact, and Amorim acknowledged that the combination with Bruno Fernandes, who played deeper, is still a work in progress.

“Matheus Cunha showed what we need – a player between the lines who is really aggressive,” Amorim said. “The connection with Bruno is not there yet, but it will be. We may also bring in players like Kobbie Mainoo or Mason Mount to improve the link-up and increase our quality in the final third.”

Amorim is also set to welcome Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, with hopes that the Cameroon international's pace will bring more dynamism to United’s stagnant midfield.

Despite ongoing transfer speculation—including links between Marcus Rashford and Barcelona—Amorim stressed that the team spirit remains intact:

“The environment is really good. If we struggle, we will struggle together. That’s the foundation. But effort is not enough at this club—we have to bring quality and win games.”

Looking ahead, Amorim emphasized the importance of building cohesion during United’s upcoming U.S. tour, where they will face West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton before wrapping up preseason at Old Trafford against Fiorentina on August 9.

“We need to create that bond—not just between players, but with the entire staff. The changes are done. Now we move forward together.”

United fans will be watching closely to see if Amorim can address the tempo and creativity issues in midfield before the 2025–26 Premier League season kicks off.
