South African star Percy Tau is reported to be close to a return to Egypt after landing a major deal with one of the country’s top clubs.

South African forward Percy Tau is reportedly close to making a return to Egypt just six months after leaving the country for Qatar.

Tau left Egyptian giants Al Ahly for Qatar SC, who gave him a six-month deal, which had an option to extend for a further two years.

However, after four assists in nine league games, Qatar SC did not deem it sufficient to trigger their two-year contract extension and released him, leaving the former Mamelodi Sundowns star looking for a new club.

Tau expressed an interest in joining any club that would meet his financial demands even back home in South Africa but according to latest reports, Egyptian giants Zamalek have revived their interest in him and could close the deal soon.

According to Egyptian outlet MBC Egypt, an agreement between Tau and Zamalek is just hours away after it had looked like talks had broken down over a month ago over the player’s supposed high salary demands.

If indeed an agreement is reached, Tau would make a sensational return to Cairo to play for Al Ahly’s bitter rivals which would not go down well with supporters of the Club of the Century after he spent three-and-a-half-years at the club and played 126 games, scoring 30 goals while providing 14 assists.

Tau is in a race against time to secure a new club which will provide him with consistent gametime to stay in contention for a place in the Bafana Bafana team for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in December as well as the 2026 World Cup which South Africa could feature in as they currently lead their qualifying group by five points.
