An Orlando Pirates representative has defended the appointment of little-known Moroccan coach Abdeslam Ouaddou as head coach, over fan-favorites Benni McCarthy and Rulani Mokwena.

Orlando Pirates have made a surprise coaching appointment by unveiling former Marumo Gallants tactician Abdeslam Ouaddou as their new head coach, replacing Spaniard Jose Riveiro.

This unexpected move comes despite intense speculation linking the Soweto giants with prominent names like Benni McCarthy and Rulani Mokwena, both of whom have previous affiliations with the club.

Ouaddou’s arrival marks a fresh chapter for the Buccaneers as they prepare for the upcoming Premier Soccer League (PSL) season.

The Moroccan coach previously managed Gallants and had a brief stint with Wydad Casablanca, which he recently left.

Pirates now look to him for leadership, continuity, and a unique footballing philosophy to challenge for silverware.

A Hidden Diamond?

Pirates’ media officer, Thandi Merafe, addressed the appointment in a radio interview on Game On, affirming the club’s confidence in their decision to go with an under-the-radar candidate.

“Our management has been working tirelessly to prepare the team for the upcoming season, making sure they get the right people in the right space,” stated Merafe as quoted by FARPost.

“We’ve seen how in the past they’ve always managed to get it right, and get the hidden diamond. I use that term because more often than not, we bring in people that the general public doesn’t know about.”

Merafe praised the club's history of identifying underrated talent, both on and off the pitch, stating that Pirates "have a very keen eye and an amazing ability to unearth talent and people that are perfect for the brand."

Benni and Mokwena Watch From the Sidelines

Harambee Stars
Benni McCarthy remains contracted to the Kenyan national football team Harambee Stars.

While Pirates settled on Ouaddou, many fans had expected a more high-profile hire.

Benni McCarthy, a former Pirates striker and coaching prospect, is currently focused on his duties with the Kenyan national team, Harambee Stars.

Meanwhile, Rulani Mokwena, who recently parted ways with Wydad remains unattached.

Despite their popularity among fans and strong resumes, the club opted for a figure they believe embodies long-term vision and values.

As the new season looms, all eyes will be on Abdeslam Ouaddou to see whether this "hidden diamond" can shine under the weight of Orlando Pirates’ expectations.
