The saints succumbed to their 18th loss of the season, leaving them bottom of the Premier League table with nine games of the season left.

The Hammers did their survival chances a world of good with three points in the relegation six-pointer and have Moroccan defender Nayef Aguerd to thank for the win.

How it happened

Southampton and West Ham came into the tie fully cognisant of the importance of the three points on offer in the crucial encounter.

After a cagey opening to the match, West Ham took the lead with their first shot on goal, as defender Aguerd scored his first goal for the Hammers with a towering header from Thilo Kehrer's set piece.

Aguerd's goal was suspected for offside, but after a VAR check that took almost two minutes, the goal was ratified.

West Ham's goal was one of only two shots on target between the two teams in the first half as both teams appeared reluctant to make attacking forays.

The match opened up in the second half as Southampton pushed for an equaliser and West Ham hit them on the break, creating the better chances of the game while keeping Southampton at bay.

West Ham came closest to scoring in the second half as Brazilian Lucas Pacqueta wasted the best chance of the closing period, sending his shot over the bar from just outside the six-yard box.

Luckily, the miss was inconsequential as West Ham hung on for the three points which puts them two points above the relegation zone with a game in hand.
