Coming into the fixture having drawn 2-2 in Lyon, United's season was banking on this all-important match.

They, however, surrendered a 2-0 lead, taking the game to extra time, where they went on to trail 4-2 (6-4 on aggregate).

The Red Devils, however, showed heart, fighting back with goals from Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, and Harry Maguire to seal a 5-4 win on the night (7-6 on aggregate).

The victory has breathed life into United's failing campaign and their passionate fanbase.

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand, who was on commentary for the match, hailed it as one of his best experiences as a spectator.

Ferdinand, who once donned the red of Manchester United during their glory days, now represents the fanbase who finally have a reason to smile in a faltering campaign.

"I've never seen anything like that as a spectator," said former United defender Ferdinand, as quoted by BBC Sports.

"It was an amazing thing. We saw so many fans leaving when it was 4-2, and you thought that was over," he added.

"I said on commentary it would take more than a miracle to get back into it, and now I'm actually a believer because that was outrageous."

It was definitely one of the best nights in Europe and a great comeback, but fellow United legend Darren Fletcher took it a step further.

"Manchester United are heading to the semi-finals on one of the most remarkable nights this stadium has ever seen in European competition," said Fletcher.

Manchester United now have a glimmer of hope as they turn their attention to the all-important semi-final clash against Athletic Bilbao.

Their immediate next task, however, is a Premier League fixture against Wolves.
