NSL Mara Sugar secures fourth place finish with victory over Mwatate United in final NSL showdown

Dawson Mwanyumba Stadium witnesses a spectacular display of skill and determination as Mara Sugar ends the season on a high note.

Mara Sugar defeated Mwatate United 1-0 in their final match of the 2022/2023 National Super League which was played at Dawson Mwanyumba Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

This victory secured Mara Sugar's fourth-place finish on the NSL standings with 60 points, while Mwatate finished 10th with 33 points."

Mwatate got off to a bright start, with Vicor Omollo looking lively for the hosts and he had a chance to grab an early goal.

Brian Kipruto set-up Ivan Tata, who controlled the ball well and he unleashed a shot which was well-saved by Mara Sugar goalkeeper Eliud Emase.

The visitors were able to create chances and they should have broken the deadlock seven minutes before the half-hour mark.

Victor Ngume was sent through on goal, but somehow the forward placed his effort wide of the target.

Mwatate were struggling to contain the visitors, who were wasteful in front of goal with Drona Langa being the chief culprit.

The ball fell kindly for Langa in the 40th minute and he was denied by Peter Madala, who ensured that the first-half ended with the two teams locked at 0-0.

Mara Sugar aimed to punish Mwatate on the counter-attack after the break and the latter aimed a rasping shot at Dennis Maui's goal in the 47th minute, but the Mwatate goalkeeper took all the sting out of the shot before gathering on the rebound.

The Sugar Millers grabbed the lead in the 51st minute from a well-taken free kick by Victor Ngume which saw Peter Madala punch the ball into the back of his own net.

Brian Kipruto had a chance to find an equalizer in the 56th minute when he ran onto Lois Chuma's delivery and the former unleashed a low shot that was blocked inside Mara Sugar box.

Mara Sugar's Plimeon Nywakwaka received the ball inside Mwatate box six minutes later and he forced Madala into a low save as the visitors looked to extend their lead.

In the 72nd minute, Alvin Ngoto chipped the ball into the Sugar Millers box for his teammate, but Eliud Emase came out to make an easy save.

The shot-stopper then produced a great save to deny Mustapha Sekanjako a late equaliser with ten minutes left on the clock to ensure that Mara Sugar walked away 1-0 winners on the day.
